Goal Template

Below is a template of a system of defining and maintaining goals. The point of this system is to create a framework to regularly direct your attention towards growing these domains.

Domains

Each domain is a area of your life you wish to consciously nurture and grow. Keep in mind that the more domains you focus on the more complicated things get.

I've found the easiest way to discover the domains is to try to do the following exercise. Write out all of your long term goals you are passionate about achieving, then try your best to group them into named categories.

For example of domains:

  • Financial Stability
  • Music
  • Aesthetics
  • Research
  • Astrus

Long Term Goals

For each of your "Domains" specify the virtues you most value and want to strive towards. These arent meant to be unobtainable ideals, and directions that will reflect within your periodic goals. For example: instead of "make a bazillion dollars" it can be "make the most amount of money humanly possible"

Yearly Goals ☀️

Until this year's end what would you like to achieve within the virtues of your long term goals? Keep in mind how much time you would like to distribute between your domains. These yearly goals will be your guiding stars throughout the year. They can be based on feelings or concrete numbers. For each yearly goal, specify how to divide it into 12 evenly distributed concrete building blocks. for example: yearly goal: "release 2 EPs" => monthly goal : "draft 3 demos and finish 1 single a month"

Monthly Goals 🌘

For this next month only, write out each concrete deliverable that is expected of you from the above monthly expcations with further details based on this specific month. If you want to manage yourself with weekly reviews, distribute your responsibilities across the 4 weeks of the month.

Week 1

  • (Financial Stability) goal 1
  • (Aesthetic) goal 2

Weekly management

If you want to do weekly reviews, write out this coming week's goals, and sit down to time box them across the days of your week. Every morning when you wake up you will need to review your agenda and expected achievements of the day, and review them at the end of the day.

Ongoing Maintanence

At the end of every period, (day, week, month, year) schedule a time to do a recap to review how well you achieved your goals and met your own expectations. You will gain useful knowledge about how well you set expectations of yourself and use that to plan the next period better.

The design of this template is based on this quote I heard and forgot that goes along the lines of "happiness isnt reaching the goal, it's knowing you're well on your way to reach the goal." The cascading periods of review are there to consistency remind you that you are doing a great job and well on your way to achieve your dream self.
